Absenteeism in Public Businesses / The Problem for Miami-Dade Transit

Abstract: The problem of workplace absenteeism has had increasing relevance as more and more employees are afforded compensatory packages that include paid sick days and paid personal days. For public institutions with limited budgets, the negotiations of employment contracts often revolves around discussions of the problem of absenteeism and the impact on budgets, performance levels and departmental efficacy. This 15 page paper reflects the scope of the problem of absenteeism in public businesses, and then considers the problem as it applies to a specific department: the Miami-Dade Public Transit.
