Foucault/Discipline & Punish

Abstract: A 3 page essay that analyzes the later part of Foucault's landmark text. The writer argues that when Foucault arrives at the transition from the classical to the modern period in the nineteenth century, he argues persuasively that the modern prison system evolved out of a modern concern for the soul of deviant citizens, as well as control over their bodies. In other words, the focus of power now takes on a disciplinary quality designed to normalize the inmate, as well as provide punishment. No additional sources cited.
