Socrates/An Imaginary Dialogue

Abstract: A 4 page essay that takes the form of an imaginary dialogue between Socrates and Senator Jesse Helms, who recently retired from public life and was a staunch foe of the National Endowment for the Arts during the 1990s because he did not consider that what the NEA funded was "art." In 1997, Helms argued that National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) funds should not go to artists who produce "objectionable or blasphemous art." This dialogue presumes that Helms and Socrates meet in the after life. Socrates, who loved to bait people, such as Helms, with entrenched positions, would be aware of Helms' stance toward art and undoubtedly address this within the larger topic of what constitutes beauty.
