Schizophrenia: Progress Toward Living a Normal Life

Abstract: This is a 3 page paper discussing schizophrenics living normal lives. An abstract is included. Schizophrenia is a mental health disorder causing delusions, hallucinations, speech and behavioral problems and occurs in approximately one in one hundred people in populations throughout the world. While people with schizophrenia were commonly institutionalized, now recent advances in antipsychotic medications and treatments have allowed many schizophrenics to maintain relatively normal lives. Treatments include aspects such as development of relationships and regimen, support networks and relapse prevention. Symptoms of schizophrenia increase with stress and/or substance and alcohol use. Recent treatments have also included holistic methods which involve those closely affiliated with schizophrenic patients and it helps in regards to personal and public support and understanding.
