Constitutional Protection

Abstract: In June of 1990, Russell and Laura Jones of St. Paul, Minnesota found a cross burning in their yard. Two adolescents were charged; one plead guilty, the other was found guilty of a St. Paul 'hate speech' ordinance which specifically makes bias-motivated cross burning a crime. The case was eventually appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme court. This 5 page paper describes the themes and findings, the controversial issues and different perspectives of that case as an example of the argument that the Constitution does not protect the average American from harm.
